This is what we do:
Our roofing story start to finish shows a typical Tar and Gravel plant or warehouse where we can take a Duro-Last PVC membrane and go right over the top saving money and offering up to a 20 year Warranty. No need to tear off the old roof (unless its saturated), no heavy disposal costs and environmental waste added to landfills.
This is a typical Tar and Gravel built up roof system
A steel deck, covered by a vapour barrier that is typically paper, some type of insulation, then four plies (layers) of paper and asphalt covered by a layer of asphalt and pea stone gravel. Hence your Tar and Gravel Built up Roof System.
Step #1 Inspect the roof for wet insulation
A test cut is made in the roof if moisture is suspected and the metal roof deck is inspected for degradation. Seen here is 2" of fiberglass insulation before the Tar and Gravel roof
Step #2 If wet insulation is found it must be removed. If not go to Step #4
In a case where the insulation is saturated it must be removed but only the saturated sections
Step #3 Replace with new insulation
When the wet roofing is removed new insulation is installed to match the height of the old roof to begin the recover process
Step #4 Install separation board
Polystyrene separation board is laid to keep the old roof and new roof separated
Step #5 Install PVC sheets and hot air weld the seams
Now the sheets of PVC membrane are installed and mechanically fastened
Step #6 Custom prefabricated flashing for all roof top penetrations
Custom details are fabricated for roof top penetrations and hot air welded to the membrane
Step #7 completed roof
This roof can be warranted for up to 20 years by the Manufacturer
Certified. Insured. Guaranteed.
